About Us
In 2002, Roundhouse Spirits founder Alex Nelson wondered to himself, "If Boulder County supports more than a dozen breweries and brew pubs, and a handful of wineries, why isn't there a micro-distillery here yet?" At that time, and still today, the vast majority of the spirits brands stocked at any bar or liquor store are owned by the same four or five behemoth, faceless conglomerates, and spirits connoisseurs have very few options if they're searching for a high quality, handmade, small batch spirit.
So, while Alex finished law school and started his career as a lawyer in private practice, he spent his free time learning as much as he could about the spirits craft and industry. "I studied vodkas, whiskies, gin, rum, liqueurs, and other spirits, but decided to start making gin not only because it's one of my favorites, but also because gins have tremendously complex flavors and still manage to be extremely versatile in mixology. Most gin contains spices and herbs from around the world, so it's a truly modern spirit for a global age. Still, the juniper berry (the principal flavor in gin) grows right here in Boulder in the open space and mountain parks, so you can say that the gin we make literally has roots right here."
Roundhouse Spirits was started in 2008 with this simple goal: Become the Front Range's premier micro-distillery. With the December, 2008 addition of Roundhouse Corretto, our small batch coffee liqueur, we're one step closer. Look for additional products in the fall. Thanks to everyone who has provided overwhelming support to Roundhouse right out of the gate!
